How Can I Pay Off My Student Loans Faster?

For those who are just starting to poke at their heap of student loans, Casey and Engen have the same tip: take a medium-heat approach, if you can.

Student loans are pretty cheap debt

Turning the flame as high as you can under your student debt pot doesnt always make sense, both Casey and Engen said, because government student loans have relatively low interest rates.

Currently, Canada Student Loans come with either a fixed rate of 8.95 per cent or a variable rate of 6.45 per cent. The interest starts accruing when you leave school, meaning that the charges begin to pile up even during the six-month grace period after graduation when you dont have to make payments.

And things are about to get even better. As of Nov. 1, interest will no longer accumulate on Canada student loans and Canada Apprentice Loans during the non-repayment period, and interest rates will be reset lower. For loans with fixed rates, the government will charge a rate equal to the Bank of Canadas prime rate plus two per cent . For variable loans, Ottawa is cutting rates to prime from prime plus 2.5 per cent.

While even the new interest rates might be higher than what youd pay on a mortgage these days, student loans are far cheaper than credit cards, which typically charge an interest of 20-per cent on purchases.

I tend to want to tackle the highest interest rate first, Engen said.

If you have more expensive debt, focus on that, while still making minimum payments on your student loans, he added.

We Became Renters And Landlords

While we were renting our primary residence in Albany, we were also the landlords of a home we owned in a different city. My husband and I have always believed in the value of building passive income through real estate. When we moved to Savannah, we decided to keep our first house, a single family home in Nashville, as a rental. Thankfully, we found good renters and a great management team so the house has created a reliable cash flow for us while providing tax benefits. This helped us optimize our living expenses even further and more than halved our housing costs.

Take This Mortgage Example

Let’s say I just obtained a $250,000 30-year mortgage at an interest rate of 4%. This translates to a monthly payment of $1,194, and I’ll end up paying a total of $179,674 in interest over the life of the loan.

After looking at my finances, I determine that I can comfortably add $300 per month to the payments. Per the amortization calculator, this would allow me to pay off the loan and own my home free and clear 9.5 years earlier than if I simply made the scheduled payment amounts. Perhaps even more significant, adding $300 to my monthly payments would save me a staggering $62,910 in interest over the life of the loan.

To recap, by increasing my monthly payments by roughly 25%, I would pay off the loan 32% faster and save 35% on my interest expense. Imagine if I had increased the payment by $400 or $500 instead.

Your results appear instantly at in the blue field at the top of the calculator and just below it at right as you adjust the extra payment figure.

Start by entering the number of months remaining on your car loan, than enter the full length of the loan, in months. If you want to see the effect of making extra payments over the entire length of the loan, just enter the full length of the loan in both places. Next, enter the amount of the loan and the interest rate. The calculator will immediately display your regular monthly payment for the loan in the place indicated. Next, enter any additional amount you’d like to pay each month. The number of months you’ll shorten your loan by and your interest savings will appear at the top of the page.

Refinance With A Shorter

A shorter term on the mortgage means it goes away sooner, but at the cost of a much higher monthly payment and perhaps some out of pocket closing costs. Examine the loan closely.

The monthly payment on a 30-year, $200,000 mortgage at 2.5% would be $790 a month.

The monthly payment on a 15-year, $200,000 mortgage at 2.25 % would be $1,310.

Thats another $520 a month to finish paying off your mortgage 15 years sooner.

The bottom line on this decision is the bottom line: Can you afford the higher monthly payment of a 15-year loan, or are you better off contributing extra each month when you can to a 30-year payment?

What Does It Mean To Pay Off Your Mortgage Early

Many homeowners would love to fast forward to when they own their houses outright and no longer have to worry about monthly mortgage payments. As a result, the idea of paying off their mortgage early could be worth exploring for some people. This will allow you to lessen the amount of interest youll pay over the term of your loan, all while giving you the ability to become the homes full owner earlier than expected.

There are a few different methods by which you can go about paying early. The simplest method is just to make extra payments outside of your normal monthly payments. Provided this route doesnt result in extra fees from your lender, you can send 13 checks each year instead of 12 . You can also increase your monthly payment. By paying more each month, youll pay off the entirety of the loan earlier than the scheduled time.

If youre considering paying off your mortgage ahead of time, make sure you avoid these five critical mistakes.

Repay The Most Expensive Debt First

Now that youve done all you can to reduce the interest rates on your loans, its time to use some fancy footwork to get out of debt faster. The idea is to use as much money as you can to pay down the principal rather than wasting it on interest that only makes your creditors rich.

You did some of that already in the step above by refinancing to your lowest rate possible. Now, you can take this idea to the next level by using the debt avalanche method to pay off your loans.

With this approach, you tackle the debt with the highest interest rates first. To get started, list all of your loans and their interest rates. Continue making the minimum payments on all of them, but put any extra money you have toward the loan with the highest rate. For example, lets say you have the following loans:

  • $10,000 federal student loan at 4.45% interest
  • $5,000 private student loan at 9.00% interest

At 9.00% interest, the private student loan is the most expensive form of debt you have, so it makes mathematical sense to try to pay that one off more aggressively. Paying it off ahead of schedule will help you save more money in the long run.

If, on the other hand, your finances are limited, you might want to build some momentum by paying off loans that have smaller balances first. In that case, compare the avalanche and snowball repayment methods.

How Long Will It Take Me To Pay Off My Student Loan

The value of your student debt depends on a number of factors: where you studied, when you studied, and how long for. Ultimately though, the general rule remains the same: the more you pay towards it, the faster the debt will shrink.

Whether you really need to concern yourself with overpaying to shrink the debt is dependent on where you studied. British students have a more relaxed, means-tested approach, whilst US students face a harsher system and therefore more urgency in paying off their loans.

Calculate By Loan Term

This option will help you to determine how long it will take to pay off your loan, based on the loan amount, the interest rate, and the proposed term of the loan. If youre simply playing around with different numbers, you can adjust the length of the loan term to determine a payment level thats acceptable to you.

But this option will also give you another important piece of information you need to know, and thats the amount of interest youll pay over the length of the loan. The longer the term, the higher the total interest paid will be. In that way, youll be able to make an intelligent decision about both the monthly payment and the total interest cost of the loan.

When you select this option, youll be asked two additional questions:

  • Loan term ranging from 12 to 84 months.
  • Extra monthly payment enter any additional principal you plan to add to your monthly payment, but leave it blank if you only intend to make occasional additional payments.

For demonstration purposes, enter 60 months for the loan term. Then hit the black Calculate button.

The loan payoff calculator will display two results:

  • Your estimated monthly payment will be $198.01.
  • Interest paid $1,880.60, which is the total amount of interest youll pay over the 60-month term of the loan.
