Student Lines Of Credit

If you have a student line of credit through your financial institution, you’ll have to pay the interest on the amount of money you borrow while youre still in school.

After you graduate, many financial institutions give you a 4 to 12-month grace period. During this time, you only have to pay the interest on your line of credit. After this period, youll pay back your debt through a repayment schedule agreed upon with your financial institution.

Contact your financial institution to get information about paying back your student line of credit.

Look Into Loan Forgiveness Programs

In certain specific circumstances, the federal government will forgive all or part of your federal student loans. If you have a particularly high loan balance, this financial relief could be life-changing.

The two main loan forgiveness programs to know are Public Service Loan Forgiveness and Teacher Loan Forgiveness. Heres a brief overview of each:

Public Service Loan Forgiveness

With Public Service Loan Forgiveness, the federal government forgives the remaining balance on your Direct Loans after you have made 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan while working full-time for a qualifying employer.

Basically, if you work for a government employer, non-profit organization, or AmeriCorps/Peace Corps, you can get your loans forgiven after you make 120 payments.

There are lots of specific stipulations, though, so be sure you understand the details before you take this path.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness makes the most sense if you plan to work in government or nonprofit work for at least 10 years and have a loan balance so high that you wouldnt be able to pay it off in 10 years or less.

Teacher Loan Forgiveness

Under the Teacher Loan Forgiveness program, you may be eligible for federal student loan forgiveness if you teach full-time for five complete and consecutive academic years in a low-income school or educational service agency.

How much forgiveness you can get depends on what you teach.

If Youre Having Trouble Repaying

If you need help with repaying your Canada Student Loan, you may qualify for the Repayment Assistance Plan .

If youre having trouble repaying a provincial student loan, contact your student aid office. For repayment assistance with a loan or line of credit provided by your financial institution, contact your branch to determine what your options are.

Understand that by making your payments smaller, it will take you longer to pay back your loan. Youll end up paying more interest on your loan.

If you consider refinancing or consolidating your student loan, note that there are important disadvantages.

If you transfer your federal or provincial student loan to a private lender, you will lose any tax deductions on your student loan interest. You wont qualify for the interest free period while you’re in school and will end up paying more interest over time.

Refinance To A Shorter Term

When you refinance your student loans, you can shorten the repayment term. For example, if you currently have a 10-year term, you can refinance to a seven or five-year term. If you have a good credit score, you might even be able to get a lower interest rate, saving you hundreds or even thousands in total interest.

Keep in mind that refinancing does have its drawbacks. Federal loans will be converted to private loans when you refinance, meaning youll no longer be able to sign up for income-driven repayment plans or loan forgiveness programs.

How Does Paying Off A Personal Loan Early Affect Your Credit Score

When you pay down your credit card balance, you lower the amount of credit card debt you have in relation to your total credit limit. This means your utilization rate, which makes up 30% of your credit score, is lowered and it can help you give your credit score a little boost. So shouldn’t the same be true when paying off your personal loan?

According to Experian, personal loans don’t operate the same way because they are installment debt. Credit card debt, on the other hand, is revolving debt, which means there’s no set repayment period and you can borrow more money up to your credit limit as you make payments. Installment debt is a form of credit that requires you to repay the amount in regular, equal amounts within a fixed period of time. When you’re done repaying the loan, the account is closed.

When you take on a personal loan, you add to the number of open accounts on your credit report. The loan can also improve your , which makes up 10% of your FICO score. But when you pay off an installment loan, it appears as a closed account on your credit report. Closed accounts aren’t weighted as heavily as open accounts when calculating your FICO score, so once you pay off your personal loan, you’ll have fewer open accounts on your credit report.
