How To Apply For A Subsidized Student Loan

No Interest and No Payments | Student Loans Help through the CARES Act

To qualify for a subsidized student loan, the government requires you meet the following guidelines:

  • Be a U.S. citizen, national or permanent resident
  • Be enrolled in school at least half time
  • Never have defaulted or owe a refund to any previous student loan or aid
  • Stay in good academic standing
  • Have financial need

To apply for a subsidized student loan, you’ll first need to fill out the FAFSA. Once the federal government and your school review your application, you will receive an award letter from your school’s financial aid office outlining the amount of aid you qualify for and whether you’re eligible for a subsidized loan.

If you decide to accept the loan, you will sign a promissory note in which you agree to the loan’s terms. First-time borrowers will also have to complete online student loan counseling that explains their financial obligations.

Your college will apply the loan funds to your school account to cover education-related costs such as tuition, fees, and room and board. If any money is left over after that, it will be returned to you, with the stipulation that you must use it for education expenses.

Student Loans With No Interest

Heres how the LOAN Act would work:

  • Would apply to federal student loans
  • Eliminate interest on federal student loans
  • Instead would use a one-time, non-compounding origination fee that student loan borrowers will pay over the life of their student loan
  • This origination fee, also referred to as a financing fee, will start on July 1, 2022
  • The origination fee will not increase over time and
  • Student loan borrowers automatically will be placed in an income-based repayment plan, during which they pay 10% of their adjusted gross income in excess of 150% of the federal poverty line, except in times of unforeseen financial hardship.

Subsidized And Unsubsidized Loan Limits

The amount you can borrow through the Federal Direct Loan Program is determined by your dependency status and classification in college. The annual and aggregate loan limits are listed in the charts below.

Undergraduate Annual Loan Limits
Health Professions* Aggregate Loan Limits $224,000

* Some professional students may be eligible for increased unsubsidized loan limits. Contact your adviser to determine if you are eligible.

What Is A No Interest Student Loan

Interest-free loans are loans that do not accrue interest. Unlike grants and scholarships the loan amount must be repaid. Because there are no interest charges the amount repaid by the borrower remains the same as the original amount borrowed. Traditional student loans, whether federal or private, all come with interest rates that are either fixed or variable.

For the 2021 to 2022 school year, the government raised the undergraduate interest rates from the previous 2.75% to 3.73%. Private loans have a much larger range of interest rates, and may range anywhere from around 1% to up to 13% APR.

No-interest loans might help you get out of debt faster. On a standard 10-year federal student loan repayment plan, with $30,000 in debt and a 5% interest rate, you would end up paying more than $8,000 in interest alone.

Federal student loans accrue interest daily. So, on that same $30,000 loan with 5% interest rate, every day $4.11 is added to the amount you owe. So with a traditional loan, the amount of interest that adds up between your monthly payments is determined by the daily formula:

Daily Interest Rate = x Principal Balance Due

Interest is charged on the principal balance, meaning the initial amount you owe for the loan.

While its not as common as a traditional loan, a no-interest student loan is an intriguing option, since it will never accrue interest.

Background: How Much Student Loan Debt Do Canadians Have

Total student loan debt owed by Canadian households stood at around $37 billion in 2016, according to the Survey of Financial Security. Overall, about 12 per cent of Canadian households carried student debt a figure that has been stable for the past two decades. For that 12 per cent of households, total debt has risen somewhat in real terms across much of Canada since 1999 , but rising household incomes means that it has been mostly stable or even decreasing as a percentage of after-tax income for those households .

Not all this debt is owed to the federal government, however, because student loan programs are a joint federal-provincial program . In 2019-20, the federal government was owed slightly more than $20 billion by 1.8 million borrowers, for an average loan balance of $11,400.

The average debt owed to the federal government at the time of leaving school for those who took out federal student loans roughly half of all college and university students was $13,549. For students who borrowed for certificate or diploma programs, the figure was $10,053, while for those who borrowed for bachelors degree programs, it was $16,345. Borrowing was substantially higher for MA and PhD programs. Fifteen per cent of school leavers with student loans had a federal loan balance of more than $25,000.

Private Student Loan Interest Rates

Private student loans are funded by banks, credit unions and online lenders, so interest rates vary from lender to lender. Many private student loan lenders offer both fixed and variable rates, so your interest rate could fluctuate over the life of the loan if you choose a variable-rate option.

Most student loan lenders set rates based on the Libor or the prime rate. However, while rates are tied to this benchmark, private lenders also typically evaluate your credit score, income and financial history to determine your interest rate. Generally, the better your financial health and credit score, the lower your interest rates will be. In order to access this information, many lenders will run a hard credit inquiry, which can knock your credit score down a few points although you can usually get a preview of your rates and terms with only a soft credit check.

Benefits Of Making Payments With No Interest

Making payments can reduce your overall interest. This is because you will first pay off the interest that had accrued before the forbearance began on March 13, 2020. Once that interest is paid off, payments will go toward the principal balance. If you can lower your principal balance while no interest is owed, the interest you pay will be smaller once payments resume.

Continuing to make payments will also improve your credit score. A good credit score can earn you lower borrowing costs on other loans or mortgages in the future.

Overall, its always a good idea to reduce debts. Payments during administrative forbearance will lower the total amount that youll pay over the course of your loan. It will also help you pay off your total balance faster.

Student Lines Of Credit

If you have a student line of credit through your financial institution, you’ll have to pay the interest on the amount of money you borrow while youre still in school.

After you graduate, many financial institutions give you a 4 to 12-month grace period. During this time, you only have to pay the interest on your line of credit. After this period, youll pay back your debt through a repayment schedule agreed upon with your financial institution.

Contact your financial institution to get information about paying back your student line of credit.

Waiving interest is great news for workers who continue to earn a regular paycheck in the coming weeks of economic uncertainty. Those borrowers can essentially attack their principal quicker and shorten their loan term.

And the 60-day forbearance for anyone who wants it will provide some relief for borrowers whose work has been or will be disrupted by ripple effects from the spread of the coronavirus. But this isn’t the level of assistance some Democratic lawmakers and consumers advocates were pushing for. Democratic senators, for example, have also pushed for $10,000 in loan forgiveness alongside suspended payments.

However the waiver can help borrowers who are currently in deferment or forbearance, when payments are paused but interest continues accruing. It also gives any borrower who may struggle with bills in the coming weeks the option to put their monthly student loan payment on an interest-free hold .

How A Direct Unsubsidized Loan Works

The key differences between an unsubsidized loan and a subsidized loan are the interest, loan limit and eligibility.

Unsubsidized student loans are more expensive than subsidized loans because interest starts accruing sooner on unsubsidized loans. The borrower is responsible for the interest that accrues on unsubsidized student loans during in-school and grace periods, as well as deferments and forbearances. Borrowers can choose to pay the interest as it accrues or to defer paying the interest until the student loans enter repayment. All federal student loans have a fixed interest rate.

If the borrower does not pay the interest as it accrues, the interest will capitalize and be added to the principal loan balance when the loan enters repayment. This can increase the size of the loan by as much as a tenth to a quarter. It also leads to interest compounding, since interest will be charged on the capitalized interest.

No-interest loans or interest-free loans, also known as scholarship loans, are offered by nonprofit organizations, state governments, private companies, religious organizations, and even some sororities or fraternities. Unlike grants and scholarships, an interest-free loan is still a loan at the end of the day, and will need to be paid back over time, even if you arent paying interest on the initial amount.

While they can be somewhat tricky to find, and not so simple to apply for, no-interest student loans do exist and may be worth looking into for the potential savings.
