How To Get Ppp Loan

Don't Miss

What If I Just Started As An Independent Contractor Or Am Self

How Did a Company Called âFâK The System, LLCâ? Get a PPP Loan?

The exception appears to be for sole proprietors, independent contractors, and self-employed individuals. In a supplemental letter on 4/14/20, the treasury department stated:Regardless of whether you have filed a 2019 tax return with the IRS, you must provide the 2019 Form 1040 Schedule C with your PPP loan application to substantiate the applied-for PPP loan amount and a 2019 IRS Form 1099-MISC detailing non-employee compensation received , invoice, bank statement, or book of record that establishes you are self-employed. You must provide a 2020 invoice, bank statement, or book of record to establish you were in operation on or around February 15, 2020.

Finally, although the Act makes businesses in operation on February 15, 2020 eligible for PPP loans, the Administrator, in consultation with the Secretary, has determined that self-employed individuals will need to rely on their 2019 Form 1040 Schedule C, which provides verifiable documentation on expenses between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019. For individuals with income from self-employment from 2019 for which they have filed or will file a 2019 Form 1040 Schedule C, expenses incurred between January 1, 2020 and February 14, 2020 may not be considered because of the lack of verifiable documentation on expenses in this period.

What If I Have Not Filed My 2020 Tax Return For My Business

The SBA does not state that you must file your 2020 tax return before you apply. The good news is that if you want to qualify based on your gross income , youll only need to complete lines 1-7 of your Schedule C to get that number used to calculate your loan amount. For many independent contractors, self-employed individuals and gig workers, that should be pretty simple. Youll find Schedule C instructions here.

Heres what that first section of Schedule C looks like:

Are Amounts Attributable To The Business Operation Of A Tenant Or Sub

No. In an Interim Final Rule on Treatment of Owners and Forgiveness of Certain Nonpayroll Costs originally posted on August 24, 2020, the SBA has stated that the amount of loan forgiveness requested for nonpayroll costs may not include any amount attributable to the business operation of a tenant or sub-tenant of the PPP borrower or, for home-based businesses, household expenses. The IFR provides four examples:

  • If a borrower rents a building for $10,000/month and subleases a portion of the building for $2,500/month, only $7,500 of the rent is an eligible non-payroll expense.
  • If a borrower has a mortgage on a building and leases 25% of the fair market value of the building to other businesses, only 75% of the mortgage expense is eligible.
  • If a borrower operates out of a shared rental, it must prorate rent and utilities as it did on its 2019 tax filings .
  • If a borrower works out of their home, only the share of covered expenses that were deductible on their 2019 tax filings are eligible for forgiveness .

Is Being Able To Repay Your Mortgage With A Ppp Loan Worth Paying Lower Interest Rate

Youll definitely pay a lower interest rate on a PPP loan compared to a conventional mortgage. But is it worth it to pay a lower interest rate on a PPP loan? Thats up to you to decide. There are a few things to keep in mind when deciding how to use your PPP loan. One is that youll probably need to pay a higher interest rate on a PPP loan compared to a conventional loan for a similar amount of mortgage debt. Second, youll need to carefully consider the impact of a lower interest rate on your monthly budget. In order to save for a home purchase, you may need to work extra hours or take on additional debt. A lower interest rate could mean you have less money left over each month to put towards your dream home.

Showing A 25% Or Greater Reduction In Revenue

A 25% or greater reduction can be shown in one of two ways:

    • Comparing your annual gross revenue as reported on your tax return in 2020 to 2019
    • Comparing your gross revenue in any quarter in 2020 with your revenue in the same quarter of 2019

For example, if a business wants to use the second quarter of 2019 where they recorded $20,000 in gross revenue, they are eligible if they recorded a gross revenue of $15,000 or less in Q2 2020.

What If I Work From Home Or Sublease Part Of My Space Can I Still Count That Rent For Forgiveness

How To Do the PPP Loan Step by Step (Part 1)

No, the amount of loan forgiveness requested for nonpayroll costs may not include any amount attributable to the business operation of a tenant or sub-tenant of the PPP borrower or, for home-based businesses, household expenses. The examples below illustrate this rule.

Example 1: A borrower rents an office building for $10,000 per month and sub-leases out a portion of the space to other businesses for $2,500 per month. Only $7,500 per month is eligible for loan forgiveness.

Example 2: A borrower has a mortgage on an office building it operates out of, and it leases out a portion of the space to other businesses. The portion of mortgage interest that is eligible for loan forgiveness is limited to the percent share of the fair market value of the space that is not leased out to other businesses. As an illustration, if the leased space represents 25% of the fair market value of the office building, then the borrower may only claim forgiveness on 75% of the mortgage interest.

Example 3: A borrower shares a rented space with another business. When determining the amount that is eligible for loan forgiveness, the borrower must prorate rent and utility payments in the same manner as on the borrowers 2019 tax filings, or if a new business, the borrowers expected 2020 tax filings.

The Positive Effects of the PPP Loan for the Industry

Community development financial institutions, known as CDFIs, and small-business development centers are available to help business owners who have questions about applying for loans. Vermont Slauson Economic Development Corp., a CDFI in South Los Angeles, has walked business owners through the process, as well as ensuring that their accounting systems and new business models are resilient, said Delores A. Brown, a financial consultant there.

The business model that sustained them prior to the pandemic may not be the business model that is going to create any sustainability moving forward, she said.

Vermont Slauson is also referring clients to partner organizations that are accepting PPP loan applications, she said.

Pacific Coast Regional has also referred loan applicants to partner lenders and provided business owners with information on other available financial programs, Isaac said.
