A recreational vehicle or RV can open up a considerable number of possibilities for the domestic traveler. From exploring campgrounds in national parks to road-tripping across the nation to see friends or family, the right RV gives you a mobile home base where you can always feel comfortable and enjoy your privacy.

Sound enticing? You will have to secure your ability to purchase an RV before you can tap into all those benefits.

For most people, the idea of buying an RV with cash is unrealistic. Just as the prospect of taking out a loan crosses your mind when you consider buying a new car, financing a loan on your RV is the easiest way to make such a large purchase affordable. However, you will often find that banks view RV loans in a manner that is similar to the way that they might look at a loan for a boat or other pleasure craft. As a result, its not always as easy to get an RV loan as it is to get a car loan.

If you find yourself asking, What credit score do I need for an RV loan? and similar questions, Resource One Credit Union has the helpful answers that you need.

Whats A Good Credit Score For An Rv Loan

A good credit score is generally a FICO score of 670 or better. Many lenders consider a good credit score for an RV loan as one greater than 680 to 700. As with all types of financing, people with better qualifications may benefit from more favorable interest rates, larger loan amounts, and longer repayment terms.

While you can get an RV loan with bad credit, you can expect your APR to be higher and your repayment terms to be shorter than if you had good credit.

Determine The Other Costs

Go ahead and get an RV insurance quote, determine where to store the RV and what itd cost and what the taxes are in your area, then ballpark the maintenance cost by talking to an RV maintenance department or an RV dealer. The great part of doing this research is that all your ducks will be in a row when you do get the RV.

RV Financing: How to Get The Best Rates On Your RV Loan

Most loans made on motorhomes and travel trailers start with the price of the vehicle being purchased. Just like any car or truck loan, commercial institutions need to know what their money will be used for and how trustworthy you are in paying that money back to them.

So you will be required to show them proof of income, as well as telling them about the RV youd like to purchase.

If a loan is made, there will be a determination of the number of monthly payments.

Also, based on the percentage rate they charge on their money, the amount required from you as a down payment.

Additionally will be your credit-worthiness. The monthly payment will also be determined by the length of the loan, which can be negotiated. Once you sign on the dotted line, the bank will process the payment to the RV dealership.

If you are purchasing from a private seller, you will receive a check from the bank to buy the RV directly from its previous owner. Your payments on that loan usually begin within 45 days after its creation.

You May Need To Use Your Rv As Collateral

In the same way as they do car loans, lenders may require you to use your RV as security. This means that if you are late or miss out on a monthly installment, the lender is legally allowed to repossess the RV.

Nevertheless, some lenders give you the option to get an unsecured loan. With this type of loan, no asset is required as collateral. Because unsecured loans are risky for lenders, they increase the interest rates. It is also worth noting that you may not qualify for an unsecured loan if you have a low credit score because you are classified as risky.

Are Rv Loans Worth It

A majority of people dont have the cash on hand to purchase an RV outright. Buying an RV is a significant financial decision that you shouldnt take lightly. Keep in mind some of the hidden costs of RV ownership when considering how much you can afford. If your loan will put a financial strain on you, its likely not worth it.

Financing An Rv Through A Dealer

Many dealers offer RV financing, and it can sometimes be easier to just do everything at the dealer. Sometimes the RV dealer can even offer the best RV loan options. Also, depending on the situation, you might have access to special promotions and pricing when going through a dealer.

Use the RV dealer in your comparison shopping scenarios. Visit your bank or credit union and get pre-approved for an RV loan before you start visiting dealers. You can use your pre-approval letter as leverage when you bargain on loan terms.

Additionally, it can make sense to visit other RV dealers and even look online if you can. RV shopping is similar to car shopping in that you want to show different dealers what offers youre receiving from others. This can help you get a better price on your RV, plus get you better financing options, especially if you have a good credit score.

RV Financing Credit Score What You Need to Get a Loan

RV loans, whether unsecured or secured, are repaid in fixed monthly installments, typically over a period of one to 20 years.

Unsecured RV loans

  • Pre-qualification: Online lenders allow you to pre-qualify for a personal loan, to compare your potential annual percentage rates and loan terms with no impact on your credit score. This isnt as common with secured loans, because their rates are determined by the vehicle youre financing.

  • No collateral: You may not lose your RV if you fail to repay an unsecured personal loan . It may also be possible to finance an older RV or one with more miles on it, which are limitations on some secured RV loans. The no-collateral aspect of these loans means rates are often higher, but some lenders, like LightStream, offer special rates to finance RVs.

Where To Find Rv Financing When You Have Bad Credit

There are several different places to look for RV financing if you have poor credit. You can look at any of the online resources listed below. These folks can determine quickly if you qualify for a loan and for how much of a loan.

They can advise what interest rate you will be paying, and the terms of a loan, but the online lenders offer an impersonal option. They have criteria, and if you fit within their criteria you will obtain financing. If you dont fit, your loan application will be denied. Its a rapid, cut and dry process.

On the other hand, if you are a member of a credit union or have a good relationship with your bank, you might try them for a more personal experience. If they know you, and have seen you working your way out of a financial hole, that might factor into their decision making process and help override the bad credit score.

Rv Financing For People With Bad Credit In Canada

RV financing for people with bad credit can be difficult to access and often comes with much higher RV financing rates in Canada. You can improve your chances of getting RV financing for people with bad credit in the following situations:

  • Get a cosigner. Your best bet to get RV financing for people with bad credit is to get a friend or family member with good credit to cosign your RV loan with you.
  • Secure your loan with an asset. You may be able to use an asset to secure your payments if the bank wont give you unsecured RV financing with bad credit.
  • Build up your credit. The last option to get RV financing in Canada is to build up your credit score so that you meet the eligibility criteria for an RV loan without paying higher interest rates.
  • What Does Financing An Rv For 20 Years Really Mean

EDITORI dont know if you can read the small print in this ad, but Camping World is enticing buyers to finance this entry level motorhome for 20 years. Camping World pushes such long-term loans to anyone it can sucker into doing it. Other dealers offer the same deal to stay competitive.

In this ad, the cheaply built 28-foot Thor Freedom Elite is offered for $76,995 $469 a month at 5.25 percent interest. Thats based on 10 percent down and payments for 20 years. At the end of 20 years, the total amount paid on the RV will be roughly $120,000! The RV will be worth next to nothing.

Or how about this paying that $120,000 for 20 years averages $16.40 a day for 7,300 days. Or, put another way, 68 cents an hour for 175,200 hours!

At the end of its first two years, the RV will be worth roughly $51,000 but the buyer will still owe about $65,000. So if something happens and the new owner must sell the RV, he or she will need to write a check for around $14,000 just to come out even. It doesnt get much better for most of the loan.

What a deal! Pick up this 1998 Seabreeze motorhome for $5,300 on eBay. What will a similar RV bought today be worth in 2038? And how much will it cost if financed for those 20 years?

Think about that 20-year loan for a moment. Let me try to provide some perspective. If, today, you were about to make your final payment on a loan you took out 20 years ago that would have been in 1998 heres what was going on in the world at the time:
