Using Direct Plus Loan Money

How To Find the Best Student Loans And Rates

Direct PLUS Loan money is disbursed directly to the school, usually twice in the academic year, and applied to the remaining balance owed. If there happens to be money left over when this is done, that money is sent to you to help pay for other educational expenses.

You can also have it given directly to your child for the same purpose. Given the cost of college course materials, this can be helpful.

Federal Loan Servicers In The Us

If you are an incoming college freshman and you want to get a federal student loan, you better be ready and know the possible loan servicers that may be assigned to you. Below are some of the most popular loan servicers for student loans. Because youll never know which of them will manage your loan, it will help to understand more about them:

About 90% of all federal student loans today are assigned to one of the Big Four servicers, which are Great Lakes, FedLoan Servicing, Navient, and Nelnet. Unfortunately, three of these servicers are also among the most hated according to complaint statistics. Navient, FedLoan Servicing, and Nelnet received 1,027 complaints per million serviced accounts during the previous year. You may have seen news about the Navient lawsuit, and that they are facing six lawsuits alleging illegally cheating borrowers out of repayment rights through shortcuts and deception.

Being assigned to Great Lakes will not be the perfect experience, either. However, as far as the other servicers are concerned, Great Lakes is your best bet for a service provider in the country. It only received 36 complaints per one million customers last year.

What Credit Score Do You Need For Private Student Loans

Theres no hard-and-fast youll need for a private student loan, as these minimums vary by lender. Obviously, it will be more difficult to qualify for a low interest rate with a bad credit score. Generally speaking, youll need at least a 620 to qualify though there may be exceptions.

Remember, though, the higher your score is, the lower the rates youll likely get. If your score is on the low end, consider bringing in a co-signer who can help. Just make sure they know the financial responsibility that co-signing a loan comes with.

What Are The Different Types Of Student Loans

Typically, student loans fall into two major categories: federal and private. Private loans are also called alternative loans.

Federal student loans: There are multiple types of federal loans but, in general, they have lower interest rates and better repayment terms than private loans. Theyre also more readily available and may be easier to obtain than a private loan. They have fixed interest rates and some options arent dependent on your credit history.

Private student loans: These should be looked into after federal student loans are exhausted. Private student loans may cover continuing education without a degree, tuition for non U.S. citizens, and for education costs incurred after graduation.

In a recent interview with Carrie Johnson, an Accredited Financial Counselor and an associate professor at North Dakota State University, she said “Federal student loans have many repayment benefits. For example, there are forgiveness options for certain occupations or in the event of a disability. If a borrower is struggling to make payments, there are options to suspend payments for a period of time. Private student loans do not offer these benefits and in many cases, if a borrower passes away, their cosigner is then responsible for the remainder of the loan balance.”

Maximum Lifetime Limit For Student Aid

The Best Student Loans To Pay For Medical School

There are lifetime limits on the number of weeks you can receive student aid. This includes interest-free periods while you are in school. Once a lifetime limit has been reached, interest starts to accumulate. You will also have to start paying back the loan 6 months after you graduate or finish your studies.

Full-time students can receive student aid for no more than 340 weeks, except:

  • students enrolled in doctoral studies can receive student aid for up to 400 weeks
  • students with permanent disability can receive student aid for up to 520 weeks

Apply For State Grants

While scholarships are usually merit-based, grants are typically awarded based on your financial need. If your family income isnt especially high, consider state grants for college.

In Indiana, for example, there are grant programs available for:

  • Undergraduates with financial need
  • Adults returning to school
  • For attending trade schools

Like scholarships, grants are a form of gift aid that almost always doesnt need to be repaid. You should always prioritize this type of cash for college over other options, especially student loans.

You can learn about grants available in your state by contacting its higher education authority via the Department of Education. Here are some opportunities organized by situation:

Know The Difference Between Federal And Private Student Loans

There are big differences when it comes to federal and private student loans. Federal loans come with benefits that private loans dont offer including loan forgiveness possibilities, income-driven repayment plans, and more options to defer loans if you lose your job or are struggling financially. Federal loans also offer some need-based subsidized loans where the interest is paid during times of deferment.

Because of the flexible payment options and other benefits that come with federal loans, most experts recommend sticking to those and avoiding private loans altogether. Still, about 5% of undergraduates used private loans in 2015, according to The Institute for College Access and Success.

If you decide a private loan is right for you, dont just sign the first offer that pops up. There are many things to consider, including the interest rate, available loan terms, and reviews and reputation of the lender. You may also want to research which lenders offer options to pause or lower your payment in a financial crisis or which lenders offer co-signer release, if thats important to you.

Ask Your School For Additional Funding

Once youve settled on your school of choice, dont necessarily settle on the initial financial aid award package.

It may behoove your family to contact your campus financial aid office and ask for more support. According to experts, there are three occasions when you could successfully negotiate your aid package:

  • Your Expected Family Contribution pumped out by the FAFSA is no longer accurate because your household finances have changed
  • Your academic record has improved, potentially making you a stronger candidate for school-sourced, merit-based aid
  • You have a better offer from another school, and your preferred school could have the purse strings to keep you in the fold
  • If you receive aid packages from multiple schools, compare them side by side to confirm which offer is the most generous.

Test Out Of Some Of Your Classes

Consider testing out of college classes. Students can reduce the number of classes they take in college with Advanced Placement test scores.

AP classes are taken during high school. When you pass the test associated with the class, some schools will allow you to skip some general education courses, allowing you to get through college faster.

In addition to AP tests, you can also take advantage of the College Level Examination Program via the College Board website.

More than 2,900 public colleges and universities in the United States will give students credit for what they already know if they pass a CLEP test, said Steve Klinsky, the founder of Modern States Education Alliance, a philanthropic organization dedicated to making a college degree more affordable.

According to Klinsky, Modern States offers tuition-free courses that can help you pass a CLEP test. The organizations first initiative is to help students earn a full year of college credits without the cost of tuition or books.

Do Private Student Loans Have Fees

Private student loans can come with fees however, none of the lenders listed above charge an origination, application, or prepayment fee. We take this stance because we don’t believe borrowers should be charged for taking out a loan or paying one off early.

That being said, lets look at the different types of fees typically discussed with student loans.

    • Origination fee: This fee is charged when you take out a loan. It’s usually calculated as a percentage of the total loan amount. For example, if you have a $10,000 loan with a 5% origination fee, the fee would come to $500. While federal student loans do come with an origination fee, none of the lenders in our list above charge one.
    • Application fee: This fee is charged to you when you fill out and submit an application for a loan. Like the origination fee, none of the lenders selected above charge this fee.
    • Late payment fee: This fee is charged to you if you don’t make a payment on time. A lender may set this as a flat amount or a percentage of the missed payment . Some of the lenders in our list do charge this fee, so we recommend putting together a repayment plan that can help you ensure you stay on schedule with payments.
    • Prepayment fee: This fee is charged if you pay off your loan early. None of the lenders listed above charge this fee.
