How Education Refund Payments Work

I PAID MY STUDENT LOAN DEBT OFF BY FLIPPING FURNITURE

Each school has its own policy and timing for disbursing and refunding financial aid. First, you need to meet the federal minimum requirements to receive the aid, and this means taking a certain number of credits, making satisfactory progress and completing any necessary documentation. Depending on the school, your loans may get disbursed once at the start of the term or twice per term.

Your school’s financial aid procedures determine specifically how long after the disbursements that refunds will go out. This might happen soon after classes start or require you to wait until halfway through the term in some cases. Your refund usually comes as a direct deposit or paper check, though some schools provide a debit card as well. You usually set up this arrangement when you accept your award package.

How Are Federal Student Loans Disbursed

If you submitted the Free Application for Federal Student Aid , you put yourself in the running for federal student loans from the government. These federal student loans include subsidized and unsubsidized direct loans, as well as PLUS loans, which your parents can apply for separately.

If youre a first-time borrower, youll need to complete student loan entrance counseling before your funds can be disbursed. Found online at the Federal Student Aid website, entrance counseling goes over your responsibilities as a borrower. It takes just 20 to 30 minutes to complete.

Once your loan is ready to be disbursed, the Department of Education will send it directly to your school. Your school will apply that money to cover tuition and any other fees. As noted above, if theres a remainder left over, your school will send it to you.

You can then use that money to cover living expenses throughout the semester. Alternatively, you could return the loan money so you dont end up paying interest on it. In fact, you have a 120-day window after the loan is disbursed during which you can return some or all of the funds.

  • Accept federal loans listed on your schools financial aid award package
  • Complete entrance counseling
  • Confirm with your school that it received the funds to cover tuition and fees
  • Employ the remainder of your loan disbursement toward additional expenses or return unused funds to the education department

When it comes to disbursement of private student loans, each lender sets its own policy.

Some lenders transfer the loan directly to your bank account shortly after your application is approved. Youre in charge of handling the money, paying tuition and using any leftover funds toward living expenses .

When you borrow a school-certified private student loan, the lender typically sends your funds to your school rather than your own bank account, after first getting confirmation of your enrollment status, anticipated graduation date and cost of attendance.

As with federal student loan disbursement, you should receive any remaining money after your loan has been applied to tuition and fees.

How Much In Student Loans Can You Take Out

You first want to determine how much you need to borrow. There is a difference between how much you can borrow, and how much you need to borrow. We recommend that you wait for your financial aid letter from your school, then determine your budget;for the term , and then decide on the loan amounts you need to borrow and how that will affect your credit history and credit score in the long term.
