How Long Does It Take to Get a Student Loan?

Enrollment verification is done through the National Student Clearinghouse, which students can access for free via myUCF. On the Student Center page, there is a drop-down box that says Other Academic. Students can open that and select Enrollment Verification. In-school deferment is all handled automatically when the National Student Clearinghouse forwards their enrollment information to the National Student Loan Data System, so there is almost never a need for paper forms unless their information was reported incorrectly. Please note, we cannot certify anything until after the Add/Drop period of each semester.

How Long Does A Personal Loan Application Take

Most personal loan applications will take less than 15 minutes, regardless of whether youre applying for a regular personal loan or a short-term loan. However, the precise time it takes to complete a loan application will vary between different lenders, and will also be affected by the personal details and documents you need to provide as part of the process.

How Long Does It Take For A Loan To Go Into My Account

Once your application has been given the green light, the actual funding is simply a question of how quick the lenders processes are for example whether they can transfer funds on a non-business day. This varies based on the type of loan youve applied for, and the lender itself:

Loans from a major bank

UK banks dont have the best reputation for efficient customer service, especially if you catch them outside of the hours 9-5, Monday to Friday. However, getting a loan from the same bank that holds your current account may actually be the fastest option available to you.

The bank has already verified your identity, and if you have a good track record with it, you may in fact already be effectively pre-approved for loans up to a certain amount. If you apply through your online banking or app, then a good bank should auto-complete much of the application form on your behalf, and you could receive the funds in a matter of minutes. If you opt for a big bank that you arent an existing customer of, then the process is likely to take a couple of working days.

Loans from a credit union

You can generally apply for a credit union loan online or at a branch. When you apply for a loan through a credit union, youll generally have to complete an application similar to those required by the big banks. This means its likely to take anywhere from 1-5 business days to apply and get approved for a credit union loan.

My Loan Application Is Awaiting School Certification What Does This Mean

School certification is a process that involves your school verifying your loan details and certifying that it matches their records. Earnest will send your loan details directly to your school to have the loan certified.

What information will my school verify?

  • Loan amount – your school will add the loan amount you are requesting from Earnest to any other loans/financial aid to ensure your funding does not exceed your cost of attendance . For more information about the cost of attendance, check here.
  • Your enrollment status
  • Your graduation date
  • Your grades – your school may require that you meet satisfactory academic progress to be eligible for funding. If you are in your first semester, you will meet satisfactory academic progress since no grades will be on file yet.
  • Disbursement date – your school will let us know when they want to receive the loan funds.

Your school will then certify your loan in one of the following ways:

Certified: no changes need to be made to the loan

Certified with changes: they may lessen the loan amount due to the cost of attendance and other aid/loans, or make minor adjustments to ensure the loan matches the school information. Please note, your school will never ask to have the loan increased.

No certification: your school will not accept the loan.

We’ll let you know via email once your school certifies your loan.

How Long Does It Take To Get A Student Loan Private Student Loans

Bear in mind that college students should always opt to take federal student loans if they can. The last resort should be a private student loan. How long it takes to get one of these varies, unlike federal ones’ timeline, which is standard. It could take over two months to receive the funds for private student loans. The maximum period is typically no more than 10 weeks, and the average usually is less. Most college hopefuls get this kind of student loan money within two weeks to 10 weeks.

The way the money is provided depends on the kind of loan chosen. A financial aid office is not always the collector. If a borrower opted for a direct to consumer loan, the school’s financial aid office would not get the funds. Instead, the process would involve the money going directly into the personal bank account of the borrower. On the other hand, school-certified loans are paid to the school’s financial aid office.

Of course, college students have variable rates to deal with where private loans are concerned, so they can never ignore that factor.

Pay More Than The Minimum Amount

If you have the means, pay more than what you owe each month. The more money you put toward your principal balance, the less youll pay in total interest over the life of the loan and the faster youll pay off your loans. If you do choose to make more than the minimum payment, let your lender know that the money is an extra payment. Otherwise, that money might be applied toward your next payment instead.

You should also indicate which exact loan should get the extra payment, so you can target the loans with the highest interest rate or lowest loan balance, depending on your goals.

Pay More Than Once Per Month

Making an extra payment in addition to the minimum can go a long way toward reducing the principal of your student loan, since youll accrue less interest between payments.

If possible, try setting up payments for every two, three or four weeks instead of monthly. Even small tweaks to your schedule can add up.

Do Student Loans Go Into Your Bank Account

When it comes to disbursement of private student loans, each lender sets its own policy. Some lenders transfer the loan directly to your bank account shortly after your application is approved. In this case, its your responsibility to send the funds to your schools financial aid office to pay your tuition bill.

Example With Dates For Federal Student Loan Process

Lets break down this timeline as though you were attending college fall 2022. Your FAFSA deadline is on . If you apply by then, your application will be processed by July 7th, 2022, latest, assuming the federal government doesnt experience any delays.

With a three-week waiting period for the financial aid award letter, youre likely to receive it on . And, with federal loans typically dispersed at the start of the school term, youd likely receive the loan by early September, 2022.

Appeal Your Financial Aid Award Letter

Should I Take Disability Student Loan Discharge?

Mistakes happen. So, if you feel your colleges financial aid department hasnt offered you enough aid, try submitting an appeal letter. To do that, youll need to write and send a letter that describes why you deserve more aid.

There could be a variety of reasons for you to write an appeal. But the ones that have the highest likelihood of getting approved usually involve changes to you and your familys financial situation since submitting the FAFSA. For example, if one of your parents recently lost their job, you might be eligible for more aid. Just keep in mind that theres no guarantee that your college will approve your appeal.

Enrolling In Deferment Or Forbearance

Both deferments and forbearances let you pause student loan payments when youre unemployed, having health problems, serving in the U.S. Armed Forces or struggling financially. But enrolling in one of these programs will delay the final due date. It may also add the unpaid interest to your student loan balance, which will increase the total interest paid over the life of the loan.

Should I Take A Direct To Consumer Loan

Much of this boils down to how essential the additional convenience is to you. Of course, you must accept all of the advantages and disadvantages of seeking funding using private entities instead of federal ones.

However, the disbursement of direct to consumer loans can be very advantageous. Instead of providing the funds to your financial aid office, the money is sent to the borrower’s account. Of course, there are numerous different school expenses that borrowing comes into the equation for.

Unfortunately, financial aid offices can take an inconvenient amount of time to provide leftover loan funds to students after the required deductions have been taken.

Direct to consumer loans don’t have this issue since all the money is readily available at the bank. However, note that the borrower needs to exercise responsibility in spending the money in the way it was intended.

Take Out Private Student Loans

If you cant get enough money from scholarships and federal aid , then you may need to consider private student loans.

Obviously, this isnt the ideal scenario. Private student loans dont always have the most attractive interest rates or repayment terms. But that doesnt mean it isnt possible to find one youre happy with.

If youre not sure where to start, read our in-depth guide on how to take out a student loan.

Fafsa Money And Other Awards Are Disbursed Twice Per Year

How Long Does It Take to Get a Student Loan

With federal, state, and institutional financial aid awards, the college you attend will distribute this money. It will not be sent directly to you.

These awards are distributed in two installments, called disbursements. The school will take tuition and applicable fees out of these disbursements upfront. Any remainder intended to go to books, supplies, and living costs will be sent to you. To ensure you know how your money is disbursed, you can check online or receive a paper invoice for how the money is split and given to the school.

Disbursements typically occur at the beginning of a semester, or at the beginning and midpoint of the school year if you attend a college that does not use a semester system.

If you have federal money left over after tuition, housing, and related fees and expenses are covered by the school, the DOE requires colleges to disburse the remainder to you, so you can pay for books and other supplies on your own. If the school does not give you this money 10 days before the term begins, they are required to provide you with another way to pay for books and supplies by the seventh day into the term, so you can be prepared for your classes. If you receive federal financial assistance, you should not have to cover these costs yourself.
