What If Student Loan Is Not Enough

How Is Student Loan Interest Calculated

What To Do When Federal Student Loans Are Not Enough

Over the past few years, you might have seen a lot of hoo-ha in the news about the government increasing the interest rate on Plan 2 Student Loans. While this is technically true, and we’re against the principle of students being burdened with extra debt, there is a very important point to stress: the added debt is essentially meaningless.

As the debt is already so big, and the repayments are so small, the chances are that you’ll never repay the full amount anyway. The IFS estimates that 83% of students with Plan 2 loans will have some or all of their debts paid for by the government, so adding more interest to the pile is a little meaningless.

Anyway, pep talk over now down to the details. Interest starts accumulating from the day you take out your loan and carries on building until the day you clear your balance.

If you repay in full, youll have paid back more than you borrowed but that’s just how interest works, unfortunately. That said, theres slightly more to it than that because of a little thing called RPI.

RPI shows how much prices have risen across the UK in the past 12 months. Student Loan interest rates are based on RPI and, as RPI can go up or down, interest rates can too.

Of course, as the interest only affects the total value of the debt, and not how much you repay each month, higher interest rates only make a difference to the highest-earning graduates .

How Much Maintenance Loan Will You Get

The size of the Maintenance Loan you’re entitled to will depend on the following three factors:

  • Where in the UK you’re from Each country within the UK has its own funding body for students. You’ll apply to the body in the country you normally live in when you’re not at uni.
  • Whether you’ll be living at home or not In most of the UK , there is more funding on offer for students who’ll be living away from home while at uni. There’s usually even more funding if you’ll be studying away from home and in London.
  • Your household income Students from households with a higher income receive less generous funding packages from Student Finance bodies, while those from poorer backgrounds receive the most generous support. Depending on where in the UK you’re from, this could determine how big a Maintenance Loan you get and/or how big a Maintenance Grant you’re entitled to .
  • It’s easiest to break things down by country, so just scroll through to where you currently live to see how big a Maintenance Loan you could receive .

And remember: your Maintenance Loan is provided by the part of the UK you normally live in, not where you will be studying. So, for example, if you lived in Northern Ireland but planned to study in Scotland, you’d apply for funding from Student Finance Northern Ireland.

Students From Or Going To Welsh Scottish And Northern Irish Unis May Have Different Rules

Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish students, including those who decide to study in England, receive their financial support from their “home” devolved administration, so it’s a matter for those governments to decide how they wish to support their students.

  • Scotland:

Scottish students studying in Scotland pay no tuition fees. English, Welsh and Northern Irish students studying there will be charged up to £9,250 per year, as will Scottish students studying in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

  • Northern Ireland:

Northern Irish students studying in Northern Ireland can pay up to £4,395 per year. Those from England, Scotland or Wales will be charged up to £9,250 per year.

  • Wales:

Tuition fees at Welsh universities are £9,000 for those studying in Wales and £9,250 if studying in the rest of the UK.

    If Youre Having Trouble Repaying

If you need help with repaying your Canada Student Loan, you may qualify for the Repayment Assistance Plan .

If youre having trouble repaying a provincial student loan, contact your student aid office. For repayment assistance with a loan or line of credit provided by your financial institution, contact your branch to determine what your options are.

Understand that by making your payments smaller, it will take you longer to pay back your loan. Youll end up paying more interest on your loan.

If you consider refinancing or consolidating your student loan, note that there are important disadvantages.

If you transfer your federal or provincial student loan to a private lender, you will lose any tax deductions on your student loan interest. You wont qualify for the interest free period while you’re in school and will end up paying more interest over time.

    Lowering Your Net Worth

Having a tremendous amount of student debt can certainly decrease your overall net worth. A 2014 report from the Pew Research Center revealed that disparities among college graduates with student loan debt compared to those without debt. The median net worth of a household headed by a college graduate under the age of 40 with student loan debt was $8,700. However, the median net worth of a household headed by a college graduate under the age of 40 with no student loan debt is seven times greater, clocking in at $64,700.

Student Loan Vs Student Line Of Credit

A student line of credit comes from your bank and is an alternative to student aid if you are not an Alberta resident. However, with a student line of credit you are not eligible for grant funding. As well, unlike a student loan, with a student line of credit you are required to make monthly interest payments while youre in school and the interest starts to accumulate from the day you take the money out of the bank. The Account Is In Default

When your payment is 270 days late, it is officially in default. The financial institution to which you owe the money refers your account to a collection agency. The agency will do its best to make you pay, short of actions that are prohibited by the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act . Debt collectors also may tack on fees to cover the cost of collecting the money.

It may be years down the road before the federal government gets involved, but when it does, its powers are considerable. It can seize your tax refund and apply it to your outstanding debt. It can garnish your paycheck, meaning it will contact your employer and arrange for a portion of your salary to be sent directly to the government.

Take A Year Out And Save Up

$260,000 Student Loan And Still Not Done!

If the numbers simply arent working in your favour, consider waiting a year to apply or defer, if you already have your place and use the time in between to work. Even if you pay your parents a little rent, you can still save a pretty penny in that time.

This might seem like a dramatic move, especially if most of your friends are heading to university and you feel like youre missing out. But if it means that money is less of a stress once you begin studying, it can make for a far more positive university experience.

Plus, a year out can also give you more time to think about your university choices, pick up key skills and experience, and even fit in some travelling.

When Are Plan 1 Student Loans Written Off

If you started studying in the 2005/06 academic year or earlier, your Plan 1 Student Loan will be written off when you turn 65. If you started uni in the 2006/07 academic year or later, your Plan 1 Student Loan will be written off after 25 years.

Note that when we say “after 25 years”, this is referring to the amount of time since the first April after you graduated .

And if the loan is ‘written off’, that means you no longer have to make repayments towards it even if you haven’t paid it all back.

Plan 1 loans can also be written off if you receive a disability-related benefit meaning you can no longer work .

    What Else Should I Know

Its important that you complete each step of this process in a timely manner because there are dates after which the loan is not negotiable. You should also regularly track the progress of your loan processing to avoid delays.

Once your loan has been processed, the amounts indicated on the loan as owing to the University will be paid directly to the school and you will receive the balance of the funds. This step can get stalled if you have interest outstanding on previous loans or if the National Student Loans Service Centre shows that you are in repayment status or if you are in default, so make sure your account is in good standing. All these items can be monitored through your NSLSC account.

Students with previous loans who do not receive their loans before the end of September, or, are not receiving a student loan this year but have in the past, can complete a Confirmation of Enrolment request by following these easy steps:

  • Go to the Student Loans and Grants tab and click: NSLSCs On-Line Services
  • Select: New User? Register and login, or create an account
  • Select: Confirmation of Enrolment Request
  • Enter study dates and program, then click: Submit
  • A Schedule 2 will suspend interest on your loans while you are studying full-time.

Note: We can ONLY confirm your enrolment within your study period not before or after. Students who need manually confirmed forms may send requests to: .

    Choose Your Housing Carefully

Once youve settled on your firm and insurance choices, make sure you explore the full range of housing options available to you. Accommodation will be your biggest living expense, but there are ways you can save some cash here:

    • A basic room is really all you need once youve put up some pictures and personal mementos, so dont be wowed by brand new halls, fancy fittings, or massive rooms these are usually at the more expensive end of the housing spectrum.
    • An en-suite bathroom will push the price up, so look for halls with shared bathrooms instead.
    • Ignore fancy extras you wont use, like cinema lounges or games rooms.
    • Its often less expensive if you share communal spaces with more people.
    • Some halls are cheaper if you move your belongings out of your room during the holidays so it can be rented out .
    • While being in campus halls for your first year has its benefits, see if renting a room in a house or flat in town would work out cheaper.
    • In second and third year, apply to be a residence assistant for free or discounted accommodation.

Consider Student Loan Forgiveness Programs Like A Proposal Or Bankruptcy

If you are not able to pay your debts by selling or refinancing assets, it might be a good time to talk to a licensed insolvency trustee about options that can eliminate your student loans. Through a trustee you have two loan forgiveness programs to deal with your student debt:

In a bankruptcy or consumer proposal government guaranteed student loans are subject to something called the 7 year rule before they can be eliminated. You must have been out of school for more than 7 years when your personal bankruptcy or consumer proposal is filed, for your student loans to be automatically eliminated.

This rule does not apply to private student loans. Student lines of credit can be eliminated in a bankruptcy or consumer proposal just like any other unsecured debt. There is NO waiting period. However, if you have a co-signer the bank will pursue them for collection.

If You Qualify To Pay Nothing And Stick With It

Your loan interest, accruing at 6.5% annually, could bring the balance of your loan beyond $500,000 in 25 years. This amount would be forgiven, but it would also be reported as income on a 1099-C and sent to the IRS.

A half-million dollars of income in one year for single filers in my home state of California will come with a tax bill north of $200,000. Yikes! This may arrive at a time when you could be sending your own kids to college, setting your eye on retirement, or perhaps youre just sick of the hustle and wanting more financial padding in your life.

If you aren’t able to come up with the entire amount due, you’ll likely be subject to more penalties and interest as you get onto the treadmill of another painful payment plan. And just so we’re clear, the government makes it next to impossible to get out of paying tax owed even bankruptcy won’t discharge it.
