Is More Student Loan Help On The Way

Andrew Pentis, a certified student loan counselor at Student Loan Hero at Lending Tree, says he expects targeted relief to continue to address different groups of borrowers.

Candidates for such programs could be teachers or healthcare workers, Pentis said, as well as parent borrowers who may be buckling under burdensome debt. People who are facing bankruptcy or are in bankruptcy may also be candidates for relief.

But Pentis said people dont have to wait for the federal government to act. Many are not aware of programs that already exist on the state level and through their schools and other resources. Pentis also advised checking with your employer to see whether your workplace offers help repaying student loans.

Pentis said most student loan repayment programs are under-utilized because people arent aware of them. Student Loan Hero has a database of 120 resources you can check to see if you might be eligible for assistance toward student loan repayment.

He said people should consider consulting a student loan counselor who can help navigate available options. Pentis suggested non-profit credit counseling agencies can help borrowers figure out their options. These agencies will often provide counselors for a low fee or no fee at all.

Drawbacks Of Student Loan Forgiveness Programs

There are three main drawbacks to student loan forgiveness programs. First, loan forgiveness is tied to politics. When the administration changes, access to loan forgiveness may change as well. Under the Trump administration, it was nearly impossible for borrowers who attended fraudulent schools to get their loans forgiven under the Borrower Defense to Repayment program. However, within weeks of taking office, President Biden approved many of those same applications.

Second, it can take years to meet the eligibility requirements for the forgiveness programs. Depending on your interest rate, your loan balance could double, leaving you in a deeper financial hole if you donât qualify for forgiveness.

Finally, the program requirements for student loan forgiveness are complicated and filled with technicalities that could disqualify you. Hopefully, pressure from consumer rights organizations and letters like this one from Senators Elizabeth Warren and Dick Durbin will lead to the forgiveness process being simplified.

Brescia went to community college, then earned a bachelor’s degree of applied science in hospitality management from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He has $41,000 left in federal and private student loans and is a co-signer on private loans that his wife, Ashley, holds.

My first-ever job was going into IHOP as a manager, and that was $38,000 a year, traveling into a different state because I just wanted to get my foot in the door. I was severely behind on bills, because the bills started coming in for student loans.

Even though I went to Farleigh for two years and got a scholarship, my bills were coming out to about almost $1,000 a month. I dont know how I was able to afford it, but I was able to, thank God. I had to put myself in a little bit of credit card debt. But eventually I kept moving up the ladder, making more money. My degree actually worked out for me.

I still pay the private loans. I have not put a penny towards the federal at this point in time. I know it would help significantly, but I dont want to pay that right now. I got my house, and that was a key factor that I had one less bill.

My wife is in significantly more debt than I am, and most of it, unfortunately, is private. I think shes above the $100,000 range. So, as a household, were probably about in the $150,000 range.

But Im afraid of the consequences of what will happen if people continue to have this debt and have no way to pay it off.

Differences Between Student Loan Forgiveness Discharge And Cancellation

How To Get Your Student Loan Forgiven

Student loan forgiveness is a somewhat loaded term that is often used to refer to similar but distinct options for financial aid with your student loan debt.

In your conventional student loan forgiveness, youre looking to get your balance owed wiped completely or at least partly, as in the federal student loan repayment program and Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. But these are generally tied to your occupation. The programs are directed toward people who enter jobs that help the public, and they either forgive the entire balance of a loan or offer an award to be used toward a balance due.

Cancellation of a student loan means more or less the same thing as forgiveness. Its often tied to the field and position youre working in, and as a result of your employment you can avoid certain payments on your loan.

Discharge works differently. If you qualify to erase payments owed due to other circumstances outside of your employmentfor example, due to permanent disability or the close of the school you went toyoure getting a loan discharge.

Cares Act Automatic Federal Student Loan Forbearance

If you have a student loan owned by the U.S. Department of Education, the government has granted you automatic forbearance on this loan under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act. The forbearance was set to expire on Jan. 31, 2021, under the previous administration, then it was extended under the Biden administration until Sept. 30, 2021.

The administration extended the forbearance period again on Aug. 6, 2021, allowing loans to stay in forbearance until Jan. 31, 2022.

Between March 13, 2020, and January 31, 2022, no interest will accrue, and you don’t need to make any payments. No late fees will apply if you stop paying during this period. You’ll know you have this benefit if you see a 0% interest rate when you log in to your student loan account. On March 30, 2021, the Department of Education extended this benefit to defaulted privately held loans under the Federal Family Education Loan Program.

Under normal circumstances, you can’t make progress toward loan forgiveness during forbearance. But under the CARES Act, you can. You’ll receive credit toward income-driven repayment forgiveness or public service loan forgiveness for the payments you normally would have made during this period.

There may be tax obligations tied to any loan forgiveness.

For them, the ongoing moratorium is simply a pause the majority of people will resume payments after the moratorium is over and will have the length of their loan extended to compensate for the suspended payments. So, if you had five years worth of payments left when the moratorium began in March 2020, you will have five years beginning when your payments restart.

If you have a loan that youre scheduled to resume paying, chances are, youve already heard from the Department of Education. The department reported sending more than 125 million monthly email messages to about 35 million borrowers between August and November to begin preparing people to resume paying their loans. The department told the Government Accountability Office it has valid email addresses for 87% of all borrowers who were granted emergency relief because of the pandemic.

The Education Department told the GAO it expects coaxing people to start payments after a moratorium of more than two years will be a challenge. The department has created a communication plan and a plan to work with borrowers to assist them.

The department plans to ease the transition by temporarily not reporting missed payments to credit ratings agencies, according to a GAO report.

Student Loan Forgiveness Vs Student Loan Discharges

Student loan forgiveness is not the same as student loan discharge, although their results are similar. In loan forgiveness, the borrower continues repayments until the application is approved and loan discharge immediately stops the borrowerâs obligation to repay the debt.

The U.S. government has also dismissed all student loans from a fixed group of individuals. Such groups are eligible for 100% forgiveness. These groups cover-

  • Borrower’s permanent disability or death.
  • Closure of educational institutions during studies.
  • Falsification of the loan credentials by the school.
  • Identity theft on someone else’s part.
  • Failure of the school to refund the required loans.
