Review Your Financial Aid Award Letter

After you complete the FAFSA and are accepted into college, schools will send you a financial aid award letter, which details what aid youre eligible to receive. The letter will detail the total cost of attendance, what you got in the form of scholarships or grants, and what federal student loans are available.

To accept, you generally need to sign the letter and return it to the school financial aid office.

Fill Out The Fafsa And Css Profile Online

When it comes time to fill out your FAFSA and if you so choose your CSS Profile, it might be easiest to do so electronically.

You or your parents can register for access to the FAFSA through fafsa.gov. After youre registered, the entire FAFSA can be filled out online, and even edited later if necessary. You can also apply via the FAFSA mobile app.

While youre at it, you can skip some of the steps above by using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to autofill much of the necessary financial information. However, it cant hurt to gather the paperwork in advance anyway, just in case you run into issues using this tool.

And if you choose to fill out the CSS Profile, you can do so via College Board. To make sure your desired colleges are included, review the list of participating schools before you pay to fill out an application.

Compare Your Financial Aid Offers

The financial aid offices at the colleges you apply to will use the information from your FAFSA to determine how much aid to make available to you. They compute your need by subtracting your EFC from their cost of attendance . Cost of attendance includes tuition, mandatory fees, room and board, and some other expenses. It can be found on most colleges’ websites.

In order to bridge the gap between your EFC and their COA, colleges will put together an aid package that may include federal Pell Grants and paid work-study, in addition to loans. Grants, unlike loans, do not need to be paid back, except in rare instances. They are intended for students with what the government considers “exceptional financial need.”

Award letters can differ from college to college, so it’s important to compare them side by side. In terms of loans, you’ll want to look at how much money each school offers and whether the loans are subsidized or unsubsidized.

Direct subsidized loans, like grants, are meant for students with exceptional financial need. The advantage of subsidized student loans is that the U.S. Department of Education will cover the interest while you’re still at least a half-time student and for the first six months after you graduate.

Direct unsubsidized loans are available to families regardless of need, and the interest will start accruing immediately.

Payments and interest on these loans was suspended in 2020 during the economic crisis, with both resuming in mid-2022.

Can You Qualify for Student Loans if You Have Bad Credit?

First, you need to learn how to apply for federal student loans.. Start by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid . The federal government uses the FAFSA to determine your eligibility for need-based federal aid.

You can file the FAFSA as early as October 1 of the year before you enter college. Some financial aid is awarded on a first-come, first served basis, so its important to file as soon as possible. You can access the FAFSA online or with the myStudentAid mobile app. Remember to fill out and submit the FAFSA as soon as possible to maximize your chances of getting the most aid.

The FAFSA will determine the financial aid amount you are eligible for in an academic year. This includes need-based aid, like grants and federal student aid. Colleges also use information from the FAFSA to award institutional scholarships. Students should file a FAFSA for every year they attend college.

In addition to the FAFSA, be sure to apply for as many scholarships as you can. There are many free tools online that can help match you with possible opportunities.

How To Determine If You Qualify For Pslf

First, youll want to visit the FSAs website and logging into your account. Youll be able to search your employer within the FSAs database and add information about your employment. Once you find your employer, youll be able to see whether it qualifies under PSLF.

Next, according to SBPCs walkthrough guide, youll want to determine which type of federal student loans you have. Direct Loans are eligible for PSLF while other loans need to be consolidated into a Direct Consolidation Loan. Until the end of October 2022, previous qualifying payments youve made on a non-Direct Loan will count for the necessary 120 payments PSLF requires for forgiveness.

Once youve completed the steps above, youll need to confirm your employment. You should then be able to submit your PSLF form.

The FSA has created a help tool to guide borrowers through completing the form.

Federal Student Loans Versus Private Student Loans

Federal student loans are made by the U.S. government. A federal loan, such as federal direct loan, will have a lower interest rate than a private loan. Federal loans also typically offer more favorable terms, flexible repayment plans and loan forgiveness options.

When a borrower exhausts their college savings and they reach their federal student loan limits, they may turn to private student loans to help cover the remaining costs. Here are some key differences between a federal student loan and a private student loan:

The federal government has two programs which can help you fund your education. You can apply for school loans from the Canada Student Loan Program or grants from the Canada Student Grants Program . Visit www.canlearn.ca to learn more and see how you can apply.

  • Canada Student Loan Program: Whether you’re a full- or part-time student, you can apply for a loan through this program. If your application meets the established requirements for financial need, you could be eligible to receive up to 60 percent of the cost of your tuition in federal loans. There is also a maximum amount you can receive, and that is subject to change, so consult the latest literature to review this cap. When you graduate, you will owe the loan amount plus interest back to the government.
  • Canada Student Grants Program: This program combines all of the previously available federal grants into one plan. Again, you have to apply for a grant and demonstrate financial need. If your application is accepted, you could be eligible for grant money, which you do not have to repay upon graduation. There are also grants for individuals who fall into certain categories, such as those who are disabled or are supporting children while attending school.
